If your application for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) was denied in Maryland, you're not alone — most initial applications are denied. But the good news is that you have the right to appeal, and many people are successful in securing benefits through the appeals process.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Don't Give Up — SSDI Denials can be Reversed

It’s important to remember: A denial is not the end of the road. Many valid SSDI claims are denied at first due to technicalities, missing documentation, or insufficient medical evidence.

Four Levels of SSDI Appeals

The SSA offers four levels of appeal, and each step gives you a new opportunity to present your case:

1. Reconsideration

  • This is the first step after a denial.
  • You must file a Request for Reconsideration within 60 days of receiving your denial notice.
  • A new SSA reviewer will examine your file — including any new evidence you submit.

2. Hearing by an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ)

  • If reconsideration is denied, you can request a hearing with an ALJ.
  • This is a critical stage where you can appear in person (or by video) and explain how your condition prevents you from working.
  • Most successful appeals are won at this stage, especially when strong medical evidence is presented.

3. Appeals Council Review

  • If the ALJ denies your claim, you can request a review by the Social Security Appeals Council.
  • They can deny the request, review the case themselves, or send it back to the ALJ for another look.

4. Federal Court Review

  • The final level of appeal is filing a lawsuit in U.S. District Court.
  • This is a complex legal process and should only be pursued with professional legal guidance.

How to File Your SSDI Appeal in Maryland
  • Online: The fastest and most convenient way is through the SSA website at www.ssa.gov.
  • By Mail: Complete and mail the required appeal forms to your local Maryland SSA office.
  • In Person: You can visit a local SSA field office to file in person, though appointments are recommended.

IMPORTANT: You only have 60 days from the date of your denial letter to file an appeal. Don’t wait too long!

Tips For a Successful SSDI Appeal
  • Update your medical records with any recent treatments or evaluations.
  • Submit additional evidence such as specialist reports or letters from your doctors.
  • Explain changes in your condition that may have occurred since your initial application.
  • Prepare for your ALJ hearing with help from someone familiar with disability law.
